The Wasco, Calif., location of Fresh & Easy, which is going out of business, is seen Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.

WASCO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Two Fresh & Easy stores in Kern County will be closing this month.

The closing signs are up, and people continuously pulled in and out of the Delano and Wasco Fresh & Easy parking lots Thursday to take advantage of the store’s going-out-of-business sales.

“My favorite thing would be the fresh-made burgers. They have different varieties,” said Anthony Pagan, citing the one thing he will miss most about the store.

“Their produce was always fresh, too. Produce, and then the fact that they have flowers to buy for either the cemetery or if you are going out on a date or something,” said Pagan outside of the Delano Fresh & Easy.

In Wasco, Glenda Pierce said it is the store’s low prices she will miss most.

“It is convenient to a lot of families that cannot go to bigger stores. I have been here several times,” said Pierce.

The store’s Britain-based parent company, Tesco, has agreed to sell 150 of its low-performing stores to a U.S. investment firm, Yucaipa Companies. In all, 50 stores will close, including the two in Kern County.

Four stores in Bakersfield - Panama Lane and Stine Road, California Avenue and Stockdale Highway, Brimhall Road and Jewetta Avenue, and Olive Drive and Jewetta – will remain open under new ownership.

Delano Mayor Joe Aguirre said he is concerned how the store’s closing will impact the city’s high unemployment rate.

The Wasco and Delano stores will be closed by Sept. 20.
