People trying to call the Delano Police Department Tuesday afternoon were not able to get through.
The cause behind the phone lines going down is still unknown.
The problem was brought to the department's attention just after 3:30 p.m. when Kern County firefighters were unable to contact the department for assistance on a check the welfare call.
After waiting on scene for a department response for more than 20 minutes, the county's emergency communications center had another engine go to the police department.
A fire department spokesman confirmed the phone lines were done, but had no further information.
A detective said he was not aware of the problem and would try to find out what happened.
The phone lines started working again just after 5 p.m.
