A New Year's Day crash on Highway 46 has killed three people.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. on the Kern County side of 46 at the San Luis-Kern County line.

Investigators said 23-year-old Herculano Hernandez of Delano was driving drunk and too fast and caused the crash.

Highway Patrol Sergeant Terry Hester said Hernandez rear-ended a Honda, causing it to crash head-on into a truck. Both people in the Honda were killed and one person in the truck has since died.

One of two passengers in the Delano man's car was hospitalized with injuries described as moderate. While the other was reportedly unhurt.

Hernandez, who was not injured, was arrested at the scene and faces charges of felony DUI causing injuries or death.
