Leaking substance prompts hazmat response in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — City fire crews were investigating a hazmat situation Monday in central Bakersfield.

Authorities were alerted when someone spotted a small blue box leaking a clear substance in the 2900 block of H Street. Fire department Battalion Chief Anthony Galagaza said they didn't evacuate anyone, but they asked people to avoid the area and stay inside.

The scene was cleared around 1 p.m. The substance turned out to be some type of petroleum product, described as similar to Vaseline.
